Discover the Green Paradise: Ecotourism in Costa Rica!

To experience the wonders of our planet while taking care of them—it's possible! There are places where conservation and fun go hand in hand, and Costa Rica is an excellent example for the rest of the world.

With its perfect blend of lush nature, breathtaking beaches, and a strong ecological consciousness, the Central American country offers the ideal conditions for responsible and enjoyable ecotourism experiences.

In today's "green" article, we'll go deeper into this trendy concept and explore the most ecotourism-friendly destinations in Costa Rica. Take notes and start planning your travel itinerary!

Let's begin by defining what we mean by ecotourism. It's much more than just a vacation—it's immersing yourself in a country's natural wealth while promoting conservation and sustainability. It's a unique and perfect combination of biodiversity, adventure, and responsible tourism.

And why is Costa Rica one of the top countries in the world for ecotourism?

Well, as we've mentioned in previous articles, despite its relatively small size, Costa Rica is home to approximately 5% of the world's biodiversity. It boasts a lot of ecosystems, including tropical forests, mangroves, volcanoes, beaches, and coral reefs, making it an ideal destination for ecotourism activities.

According to data from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), in 2019 tourism represented approximately 8.2% of the gross domestic product (GDP), thanks to ecotourism activities.

This demonstrates the significance of this concept in many ways: not only in attracting visitors but also in protecting the natural environment, preserving fragile ecosystems, promoting environmental education, and supporting local communities.

And how can you, along with your partner, family, or friends, contribute to making all of this possible? Here's a select list of destinations where you can enjoy an unforgettable ecotourism experience:

  1. Monteverde: Where else could we start but here? It's number one choice for nature lovers. There's nothing like taking a stroll along the trails of the Cloud Forest, where the dense mist embraces the trees, making you feel like you're walking among the clouds. Discover the rich diversity of birds, butterflies, and orchids as you explore the hanging bridges.
  2. Tortuguero National Park: A wildlife adventure awaits you here. This national park is home to countless animal species, including endangered marine turtles. Observe the turtles nesting on the beaches and be amazed by the abundance of birds, monkeys, and caimans in the canals.
  3. Corcovado National Park: Immerse yourself in the pristine jungle of this hidden treasure. In Corcovado, you'll feel like an authentic explorer, walking along trails surrounded by dense vegetation with the background sounds of howler monkeys and tropical bird melodies. Don't miss the opportunity to admire the pristine beaches and go diving into the crystal-clear waters.
  4. Manuel Antonio National Park: Jungle and beach in perfect harmony. This national park offers the best of both worlds, with lush tropical rainforests a few steps away from beautiful white sandy beaches. Watch monkeys play in the trees, relax under the sun, and take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.
  5. La Amistad Biosphere Reserve: This transboundary reserve, shared with Panama, is a treasure trove of biodiversity and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its trails and rivers while marveling at the beauty of its mountainous landscapes and the endangered species that inhabit them.
  6. Arenal Volcano National Park: Adventure and relaxation in one place. With the imposing Arenal Volcano as your witness, you can walk through its trails or immerse yourself in natural hot springs. You can also enjoy canopy tours, nocturnal walks, and kayak rides on the nearby lake.

So, here are six destinations to begin your ecotourism adventure. We don't give you more options—not because we lack them—but because we don't want to be responsible for extending your vacation indefinitely (or do we?).

In any case, you already know that Costa Rica offers endless activities to enjoy while reconnecting with nature and supporting local communities. From hiking and canopy tours to rafting and diving, there's something for every taste and adrenaline level.

Now, there's just one thing missing: the vehicle to comfortably and safely reach those recommended destinations. At Toyota Rent a Car, you can choose the one that best suits your needs, the number of passengers, and your budget: A Yaris Sedan, the new SUVs (Raize, Rush, and Corolla Cross), or a 4x4 (Rav 4, Hilux, and Fortuner).

The best part is that by renting any of these vehicles, you're already practicing ecotourism. With an environmental focus, Toyota Rent-a-Car aims to reduce its carbon footprint throughout all its processes.

Through continuous vehicle maintenance and specific eco-friendly actions like planting native trees in Guanacaste and making monthly contributions to FONAFIFO (“Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal”), we measure and mitigate the impact of our services and vehicle fleet.

Besides that, all the oil used in our cars gets refined it, which contributes to lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

If you want your next vacation to be truly eco-friendly from day 1, start by booking your rental car on our website, through WhatsApp or Telegram (+506 7235-8722), or by calling us at +506 4036-7422 or +506 4036-7423.

That is the first step toward an adventure that combines thrills, environmental consciousness, nature connection, and an eco-friendly means of transportation. Is it any more “pura vida” than that?
